A British entrepreneur named Mudie published in 1820 a series of forty medals depicting British successes during the Napoleonic period. Many of the dies used for this series were engraved in France, Mudie explaining that the French die engravers were better than the English for everything except portraits. Most of the portraits in this series are of British subjects, engraved by British artisans.
