This jetton celebrates the founding of the Order of the Iron Crown in Napoleon's
Kingdom of Italy and illustrates the fact that the designers in France did not
know what the famous Iron Crown looked like, an ignorance perpetuated by the
catalogers of Napoleonic medals. Only on some of the medals engraved by Manfredini
in Napoleon's Milan mint do we see represented the Iron Crown, a series of enameled
and bejeweled golden plaques, held together by an iron band said to have been
forged from nails from the crucifixion of Christ.
